That's how the Epic of Gilgamesh begins: with the man who saw everything, the deep included. In Tablet XI, Gilgamesh learns of a plant at the bottom of the sea that can make the old young again. He ties heavy stones to his feet, sinks to the sea floor and pulls it up. On the way home a snake steals it while he bathes. He loses the prize, but he comes home knowing what matters.
The design shows that dive: a line from the surface down through rows of scale-pattern waves, to the thorny plant on the sea floor. For anyone who has gone all the way down on something and come back changed.
